2017 IRONMAN winter sprint
Super Heavy division - Results
Results, Feb. 1, 2017
GoPro Motorplex’s IRONMAN Winter Sprint format features 18 drivers competing in a 2-lap qualifying session, followed by a 10-lap Sprint race and then a 40-minute individual Endurance race with two mandatory kart swaps. Super Heavy Division drivers must weigh or weigh-up to make the 225 lb. weight limit to even the playing field.
Competitors in tonight’s IRONMAN Winter Sprint Super Heavy Division event didn’t have to battle the cold temperatures, rain or snow as in previous years. In fact, they had the exact opposite; clear skies and nearly 70 degrees. However, tonight’s SOLD OUT field of Super Heavy Division drivers still fought the same grueling, 40-minute endurance race to determine who would take the IRONMAN title.
The key to defeating the challenging IRONMAN Winter Sprint format is certainly to outlast, outwill and outdrive the competition. This week, Kyle Kercher rose to the top to take the 2017 Super Heavy Division IRONMAN title.
Kyle Kercher and Mike Contarino each lead about 5 laps each of the 10-lap Sprint Race. However, it was Doug Rink who executed a surprise, last-lap pass to take the win. Kercher finished in second and Contarino in third.
Next, competitors began the last leg of the IRONMAN, the 40-minute Enduro, with an exciting and unique ‘standing’ start.
Rink used his first-place starting spot to his advantage to shoot out to the early lead on the field. However, behind him, Kercher was glued to Rink’s bumper and running the fastest laps of the race tucked in Rink’s draft.
The running order shuffled as competitors cycled through their mandatory two pit stops. With just 15 minutes remaining on the clock, it was Kercher out front and strategy became the name of the game more than ever. Kercher went on to take the Enduro win with a dominating 21.959-second margin of victory over Rink in second and Contarino in third.
However, the overall IRONMAN winner is determined through combined points of both races. Even after points calculations, the overall win and IRONMAN Super Heavy title went to Kyle Kercher!
Congrats to all of our diehard competitors for completing the IRONMAN!
